Embark on a New Family Adventure in Harrisonburg

Travel South on Interstate 81 to Harrisonburg, a family-friendly travel destination that boasts an extensive selection of museums, parks, playgrounds, art activities, and kid-friendly eateries.

Make your first stop the Valley Turnpike Museum. Located in the Hardesty-Higgins House Visitor Center; the museum explores the history of the road known by many names, now known as US Route 11. Become a museum detective or go on a scavenger hunt in the second oldest house in downtown Harrisonburg. (Open seven days a week 9 am – 5 pm.)

At Explore More Discovery Museum (picture left) children of all ages can dive into the museum’s numerous exhibits, including the Construction Zone, Friendly City TV Studio, Virginia Theater, and Down Home on the Farm, among others. Free weekday programs also allow the kids to become science explorers, Lego maniacs, young explorers, or studio kids for the day.  (Open Tuesday-Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.)

Located in the Public Safety building just a few blocks from Explore More, the Larry W. Shifflett Fire Museum is an intriguing venue for the entire family. The museum houses a rich display of historic fire memorabilia including uniforms, medals, equipment, old fire alarms, and photographs. This free museum also has an exhibit where kids can dress up in fire gear and take a photo in front of a “burning building.” (Open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Meet our local farmers while picking up fresh produce at the Harrisonburg Farmers Market. Located at the Turner Pavilion, our farmers market provides locals and visitors alike with access to fresh, nutritious, locally produced agricultural goods and crafts. Grab your local in season produce from asparagus to zucchini, artisan breads and a wide variety of delicious baked goods, free range meats and eggs, cheeses and prepared foods. You can even pick up seasonal fresh cut flowers, bedding and nursery plants, select local crafts and much more. Stop by for the Second Saturday Acoustic Jam- a great way to experience “fresh, local” music! (Open Tuesdays & Saturdays)

Make sure to consider A Dream Come True Playground in your plans; the completely accessible play area is a haven for kids, with separate equipment for 2-5 year olds and 5-12 year olds featuring a rock, rainbow arches, shade structures, roadway, hammock swing, draw wall, pavilion and family comfort stations that are fully accessible.

Bike/Walk your way through our new Bluestone Trail. The Bluestone Trail is a 1-mile shared-use path that connects people between James Madison University; Port Republic Road and Hillside Avenue; Purcell Park and the surrounding neighborhood; and businesses along Stone Spring Road. The shared-use path is 10-feet wide, hard surfaced, and is used by many walkers, joggers, and bicyclists for transportation and recreation. So Get Outdoors with the kids!
