Each letter of the public artwork respresents a distinctive strength of the local community: diversity, agriculture, outdoor recreation, and the arts. By sharing your LOVEworks images on social media, you will be connecting with others who agree that Virginia is for Lovers, and “LOVE” is at the heart of every Virginia vacation!
History & Purpose:
Harrisonburg and Rockingham County compose a unique community in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, with a diversity of ethnic backgrounds, a rich agricultural heritage, an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities, and a vibrant and growing arts scene. The LOVEworks letters provide an interactive, educational representation of these community strengths.
Each letter represents one of four focus areas and was constructed of locally sourced and repurposed materials. The letters sit on a base of local bluestone, the same attractive and stable material that has become a signature of buildings throughout the area and on the campuses of Harrisonburg’s higher education institutions, James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University. Educational plaques describing the broader cultural themes, materials used and their significance, and the names of local artists who designed the sculpture and contributing community partners will soon be on display with the sculpture.
LOVEworks began as a statewide campaign by the Virginia Tourism Corporation in the summer of 2012; localities and tourism destinations that created a local LOVE artwork to promote the best attributes of the destination as part of the Virginia is for Lovers campaign were reimbursed for their efforts. Since then, LOVEworks have been popping up around the state. Harrisonburg is now one of 27 (and growing) distinctive locations with a custom LOVEworks structure.

The LOVE artwork is located in the grassy lot behind the Arts Council of the Valley office, facing the Municipal Parking Lot and the Turner Pavilion in downtown Harrisonburg.
