Bike Walk Paths

Getting out for a stroll or bike ride in Harrisonburg’s extensive system of bike and walking paths is a snap, with a wide-range of choices at your fingertips.

 

Bluestone Trail
The Bluestone Trail is a 1-mile shared-use path that connects people between James Madison University; Port Republic Road and Hillside Avenue; Purcell Park and the surrounding neighborhood; and businesses along Stone Spring Road. The shared-use path is 10-feet wide, hard surfaced, and is used by many walkers, joggers, and bicyclists for transportation and recreation. Visitors driving to visit the Bluestone Trail can park their vehicles at Purcell Park.

Hillandale Park

Located off of Route 42 south on Hillandale Avenue, this 74 acre park has 12 picnic shelters, playground equipment, and a 1.3 mile walking trail.  The trail includes 11 pieces of exercise equipment that targets strength, cardiovascular health, and flexibility. The park includes a regulation sand volleyball court, two asphalt basketball courts, three restroom facilities, two horseshoe pitching areas, and a reproduction log cabin.  Shelters 1, 3, 6, 7, 12 and all comfort stations are wheelchair accessible.
Hillandale Park also marks the entrance to the Rocktown Bike Trails.

Purcell Park

Purcell Park is a 67 acre park located on Monument Avenue on the east side and on South Main Street on the south side of the park. There are two entrances to the park – one from Monument Avenue and the other from Miller Circle off of South Main Street. The park has three softball/baseball fields, four tennis courts, two playground areas, three picnic shelters, several restrooms, and a 1.5 mile walking trail.

Ralph Sampson Park
431 East Washington Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22802
Located on East Washington Street, Ralph Sampson Park covers 31 acres. The park has two picnic shelters, restroom facilities, two tennis courts, three basketball courts, playground equipment, a sports field, and horseshoe pits. A recently added, natural surface walking trail (0.3 miles) runs through the park as well.

Rocktown Trails at Hillandale Park
Rocktown Trails at Hillandale Park is a joint effort of volunteers and the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). The trail system offers three different levels of difficulty to appeal to a complete spectrum of runners, walkers and cyclists from novice to expert. Designed and developed in accordance with the IMBA guidelines for sustainable shared-use trails, it has a system of stacked loop trails with three levels of difficulty.

Smithland Road Soccer Complex
1542 Smithland Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22802
Located off Old Furnace Road and Smithland Road, the soccer complex sits on 130 acres and has three full size soccer fields, natural surface trail (0.75 miles), comfort stations, and pavilion.  Additional developments are planned.
