HOMETOWN GIRL: APPLIQUED QUILTS OF MIMI DIETRICH
September 21, 2021 - February 9, 2022
Mimi Dietrich was born in Baltimore, grew up in Baltimore, and is truly a Baltimore Hometown Girl. In 1982, Mimi and her quilting friends went to the Baltimore Museum of Art for an exhibit featuring historical Baltimore Album Quilts. She loved the colors, the intricate appliqué designs, and the fact that these nineteenth-century masterpieces were originally made in her hometown. She had to make one!
For more than 35 years, Mimi has taught appliqué classes, written quilting books, and traveled to guilds and festivals. She inspired thousands of quilters to pick up a needle and learn to appliqué. Her favorite classes are year-long Baltimore Album classes where students learn a variety of techniques and share ideas. Inspiration for her own Hometown Girl quilts comes from her love for historical quilts. Some imaginative modern quilts may stretch the traditional boundaries, but there are always appliqué stitches! Her quilting journey has taken her on many adventures, including The Quilters Hall of Fame, but Mimi always comes home to Baltimore.
