Nature Walk on Shenandoah Mountain

May 14, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Date:  Saturday, May 14, 2022
Time:  9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Place:  Confederate Breastworks on Rt. 250 (directions)
Leaders:  Henry and Becky Wilbur

We will hike along the crest of Shenandoah Mountain stopping frequently to make observations on the natural history of the area with an emphasis on the plant communities and speculation on the history of the forest. We will opportunistically include comments on animals and geology. We hope all participants will share their knowledge and ask questions. The more we observe, the less distance we will travel, but a reasonable guess would be an easy round trip of four miles .

About the Hike Leaders
Becky Wilbur received a BS in Biology from Stanford and a PhD in Botany from Duke. After raising two daughters, she taught biology at the Curry School of Education at UVA and for teachers at the Renaissance School in Charlottesville. Henry Wilbur has a BS from Duke and a PhD from Michigan, both in Zoology. His academic career at Duke and Virginia focused on population and community ecology with experimental work on temporary pond assemblages of zooplankton, frogs, salamanders, and insects. Henry and Becky spent 36 summers at Mountain Lake Biological Station in southwestern Virginia where Henry was the Director (1991-2007).
