Set My Spirit Free: Jazz Music’s Soul Connection

All are welcome to this combination concert, worship service, story telling and poetry event which will contextualize the uniquely American art form of jazz music and celebrate its place in the worship traditions of the Black church.
In addition to a professional jazz ensemble, Rev. Edward Scott (Allen Chapel AME, Staunton) will share, and Dr. Joanne Gabbin, of JMU’s Furious Flowers poetry center, will share poetry written about jazz for the event.
Program sponsors: Eastern Mennonite University Music Department, Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, and the Racial Justice Task Force of Virginia Mennonite Conference.
The program is free and open to the public in the school’s auditorium.
