Heart-Pumping Adventure

The Shenandoah Valley is home to lush greenery and breathtaking mountainous views, making a trip to Harrisonburg a memorable site for both visitors and residents. Whether via bike, boat, or greenways, there are several ways to take advantage of Harrisonburg’s picturesque outdoor landscapes.

Day One:

Start your adventure at one of three local bike shops Shenandoah Bicycle Company,  Bluestone Bike & Run or Rocktown Bicycles, where you can not only talk with cycling experts, but also rent or purchase all the gear you need, making for an easy recreational day activity. Then take the bike out to Bluestone Trail or Rocktown Trails at Hillandale Park. From shared lanes and bicycle racks in more populated areas to countless miles of winding country roads and plans for a new greenway, Harrisonburg’s amenities have earned the city’s titles of both a Bronze Level Ride Center and honored as a Bronze Award Bicycle Friendly Community.

If hiking is more your idea of outdoor adventure, grab your gear and enjoy the renowned views of the George Washington National Forest, explore the treasure that is Shenandoah National Park, tackle the Humpback Rocks of the Blue Ridge Parkway, or simply breeze through the scenic Northend Greenway. Each of these trails and parks brings its own unique recreational challenges, charm, and atmosphere for visitors and residents.

Day Two:

After taking in the wonderful views consider fishing along the serene waters of Lake Shenandoah or bring your rod to the Silver Lake Mill, where wildlife and flora are bountiful. But first visit Mossy Creek Fly Fishing for all of your fishing essentials, and chat with owners and long-time fly-fishing veterans Brian and Colby. Lovers of the outdoors would also benefit from a drop through Dubby’s, where you can pick up both trout fishing and hunting supplies.

And when the cold weather heads to the Shenandoah Valley; plan a snowy weekend getaway in Harrisonburg. Bundle up for cross-country skiing at the 67-acre Purcell Park, located just minutes from downtown and conveniently next to I-81. And for more snow sport adventure, explore all the activities Massanutten Resort has to offer, including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and ice skating.

Don’t forget about our annual Ice Bowl Disc Golf Fundraiser when scheduling your trip, as it’s a great opportunity to participate in a fun-filled day of disc golf while giving back to a good cause.
