Art Walk Through Downtown Harrisonburg

Take an afternoon to stroll through and discover all the artistic splendor Harrisonburg can offer or stop by for First Fridays Downtown exciting monthly event that happens all 12 first Fridays of the month and involves over 30 participating venues throughout downtown Harrisonburg.

Historical Harrisonburg Podcast Tour

The Harrisonburg Walking Tour Project provides audio podcasts of historical landmarks in Harrisonburg, Virginia. As part of a course on Urban History at JMU taught by Professor Evan Friss, undergraduate students selected historical sites, conducted archival research, and narrated these podcasts that can help guide you on a memorable tour of Harrisonburg.

Hugo Kohl Boutique and Studio

Awaken your inner artisan at Hugo Kohl Jewelry and The Museum of American Jewelry Design and Manufacturing in the historic Ice House in downtown Harrisonburg. In the early 1800s to the mid-1940s, a master engraver would create jewelry models by hand-carving each design into steel.  At the Hugo Kohl studio, these hand-engraved hubs and period technology are used to create timeless pieces of jewelry. Your group will be treated to a guided tour of our studio where our artisans work and have the opportunity for a hands-on experience creating your own masterpiece. They offer  “Make Like the Masters” experiences where appointments can be made to work directly with Hugo to create either a pair of vintage Die Struck earrings ($100) or a Die Struck money clip ($65).  We ask guests to call ahead to schedule these experiences. Tour only:  $5 per person

Lost Shoe Loop Mountain Trail
Guides will lead visitors to the cool clear waters of the North Fork of the Shenandoah with its attendant herons and wood ducks, painted turtles and damselflies. Visit suburban lakes and marshes for migrant waterfowl or the occasional errant tern or gull; even step below ground for more of nature’s natural wonders and the occasional roosting pipistrelle bat. Visiting these historic hills is sure to bring unforgettable wildlife experiences for years to come. Harrisonburg’s very own Edith J. Carrier Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a stop on the loop.

The easy-to-read map and brochure will take you on an exploration of iconic Civil War sites including key battlefields, cemeteries where soldiers were buried and sites involved in The Burning.
